Butterfly Milkweed - Asclepias tuberosa - Plants For Pollinators

Butterfly Milkweed - Asclepias tuberosa

$ 5.99

Butterfly Milkweed (Asclepias tuberosa), is THE preferred host plant for Monarch Butterflies to lay their eggs on and the Genus Asclepias provides the only food that Monarch larvae will eat. Chemical compounds in the leaves make the larvae distasteful to birds thereby protecting the young Monarchs from predation. The bright orange flowers bloom early to mid-summer and are absolutely stunning in their beauty.

Butterfly Milkweed prefers full to partial sun in well drained to loamy soils. It's deep tap root reserves keep the plant alive as the young Monarchs eat the leaves of the plant. The deep root is the reason why you should never try to dig plants from the wild. Severing the tap root kills the plant 100% of the time. This is why it is critical to plant using seeds or purchased plants from reputable and pesticide free nurseries.

Our seed packets contain approximately 50 Pure Live Seeds.
